Seeing is Not Always Believing

I read John Berger's Ways of Seeing during freshman year of art school, and that line "Seeing is believing" is burned into my memory.

Love the book but alway wonder about other possibilities when such concept may fail to apply.

Such as the people we meet in life.

A woman like her but which one is she? The starved one who cries out for help, or the beautiful one who gladly says no? The toothless one who wishes for a bite, or the stoic beauty with eyes so round and expressionless that they are hallow?

Or someone like him? Terrifyingly beastly but with another face softly wrapped around him with gentle eyes? Sometimes when I meet people, I don't know which face I'm supposed to react, as I cannot tell which one is the disguise and which one is the real face.

If the real face exists at all.

Seeing is not always Believing, that much I know.

That much I learned.

That much I wonder what others see in me.
